Italy: Bodiroga Out To Prove Critics Wrong

20.07.2005

Dejan Bodiroga has warned critics not to write him off after signing for Italian club Lottomatica Roma.

The 32-year-old failed to find his form last term as Barcelona suffered a disappointing season, leading many to say his best days are behind him.

But the Serbo-Montenegrin star intends to prove his detractors wrong, as he has done throughout an illustrious career.
I have won like no-one else and still people question me. I am not going to answer them, I will do my talking on the court
Dejan Bodiroga

"There are people that when they do not have an argument will say something like that and they have done this too many times during my career," Bodiroga told El Mundo Deportivo.

"When I started off people said I was too young, then they said I was too slow and that I would never be able to achieve anything.

"I know my limitations and defects, but also my value, and during 10 years I have set the pace in the teams that I have been in.

"I have won like no-one else and still people question me. I am not going to answer them, I will do my talking on the court."

The Serbia & Montenegro international is looking forward to the forthcoming EuroBasket, which will take place in his home country in September.

And Bodiroga is aware that expectations will be high amongst the host nation because of their previous success in the competition.

"We will see what happens this week when (coach) Zeljko Obradovic announces his team," Bodiroga added.

"If we are all there then I think that we will have a good chance but it is going to be a very equal tournament as there are eight to 10 teams that are fighting for a medal.

"As a result of our history, Serbia are obliged to do something special. In the last five European Championships we have won three gold and a bronze but a bronze here will be like winning nothing at all.

"It is the philosophy of the country that gold is the only thing worth winning."
