Vintage Kirilenko as Russia beat Turkey

01.09.2005

Russia's chances of reaching the podium at EuroBasket 2005 depend heavily on the form of Andrei Kirilenko.

If the NBA All-Star is in excellent shape and plays at his best, Russia are darkhorses for a medal and could even capture gold.

If Kirilenko is not on top of his game, however, the Russians will not like their chances with an early exit from the competition likely.

The good news for fans from Moscow to St Petersburg is that Kirilenko, the leading player with the Utah Jazz these days, looks to be at his best going into the EuroBasket.

In the Efes Cup game against hosts Turkey on Wednesday night, the star power forward exploded for 27 points as Russia prevailed 83-74.

Another who is important for their chances is CSKA Moscow guard Jon Holden, an American-born star who now has Russian citizenship.

He showed his value against Turkey by pouring in 22 points.

Mirsad Turkcan had 18 points to pace the Turks.

Russia and all of the teams in the Efes Cup are preparing for EuroBasket 2005 in Serbia & Montenegro.

That event tips off on September 16.
