Stoykov Heroics Not Enough For Bulgaria

09.09.2005

Bulgaria's Todor Stoykov had 19 points but his team crashed to defeat against Turkey in the Limoges Tournament.

In a pre-EuroBasket friendly, Bogdan Tanjevic's Turkey took control of the contest in the first half and led 51-29 at half-time before cruising to a 73-67 triumph.

Stoykov, a 1.98m forward, buried a trio of three-pointers but Bulgaria lost against a side they will face in Group B of the EuroBasket on September 17 in Podgorica.

The Bulgarians are underdogs heading into the EuroBasket but Stoykov, his team's captain, should cause some problems for opponents in Serbia & Montenegro.

Now 28, the left-handed star was outstanding for Academic Sofia last season and is as fearless a competitor as they come in Europe.

Yulian Radionov came off the bench and weighed in with 10 points for Bulgaria.

As for Turkey, Hedo Turkoglu sat out the game to rest a niggling injury while Tanjevic also has concerns about Cenk Akyol, who left the game with a wrist problem.

Turkey captain Ibrahimi Kutluay led his team with 14 points.
