Spain: Navarro Breaks Bone in Hand

27.02.2004

The Olympics are several months away but Spain coach Moncho Lopez is starting to have cause for concern about the fitness of his players.

On Thursday, 24 hours after national team forward Roger Grimau had foot surgery, Juan Carlos Navarro, one of Spain's key figures in their silver-medal winning 2003 European Championships team, broke a bone in a finger on his left hand.

Navarro was playing in the Copa del Rey and helping Barcelona beat Real Madrid when he had to leave the game.

Navarro averaged 16 points a game at the Eurobasket in Sweden. He had a match-winning performance in the semi-final victory against Italy when he had 23 points.

His role in Athens is uncertain, though, with Lopez also expected to have Utah Jazz point guard Raul Lopez in the mix. Lopez has been outstanding in his rookie NBA campaign.
