 Fernandez Claims MVP

09.04.2006

Rudy Fernandez claimed his second major Most Valuable Player award in his young career following a stellar performance at the EuroCup Final Four.

The 21-year old put up a game-high 22 points in the semi-finals and followed that up by scoring 17 in the finals to win the MVP.

"I am so happy to win this award and to win the EuroCup," said Fernandez.

"This is the most important win in my career. This is the best feeling."

In the semi-final, Fernandez broke open a close game by scoring 11 points in the fourth quarter to give Joventut an 88-78 win over Kyiv.

Fernandez delivered the crushing blow to Khimki in the final by scoring seven points in the final two minutes of the first half to allow his side to take control of the game.

"Rudy Fernandez is a tremendous talent and we are very happy for him," head coach Aito Garcia said.

In 2004, Fernandez earned MVP honours at the Copa del Rey which led to his inclusion in Spain´s Olympic team.

The following year, Fernandez battled injuries, lofty expectations and struggled throughout the year.

"He was not always on top of his game mentally last year and there were lots of problems because of all the hype that surrounded him after he was on the national team and won Copa del Rey MVP," Garcia said.

"This year he really made big improvements, particularly on the mental side."

"I hope that we won´t have the same problem again now that he has won the EuroCup MVP."
