Spain: Rudy Wins Another Weekly Award

21.11.2005

The plaudits keeps coming for Spain international Rudy Fernandez who has claimed his second ACB nomination in the last two weeks.

Last week, the DKV Joventut shooting guard, who is aged only 20 years and seven months, was named as the second youngest weekly MVP in the league's history.

He followed that performance with 16 points and four rebounds this weekend, seeing him share the award for the best Spaniard in the league with Unicaja Malaga's Jorge Garbajosa.

Thirteen of Fernandez's points came from free throws and he admitted he was not expecting the recognition.

"I am honestly surprised this time, because I only got one basket in open play," Fernandez told the ACB.

It is extra special to share the award with Jorge Garbajosa, because I know him well and he is a player I really admire.

"The important thing sometimes is to help in other aspects of the game to help your team and I think I did do that in this game.

"It is extra special to share the award with Jorge Garbajosa, because I know him well and he is a player I really admire."

Fernandez was also pleased that on this occasion his display actually meant something to his side, with his 32 points last week failing to prevent Joventut losing their game to Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada, while Sunday saw them defeat Etosa Alicante 80-69.

"Last week's performance served for nothing at all, so I am more satisfied this week," he said.

Joventut's win coincided with the return of point guard Elmer Bennett after an ankle injury, and Fernandez acknowledged the importance of the veteran American to the side.

"He is very important for all of us," he said.
