The only thing that can prevent Spain from seizing European glory in Sweden is complacency, according to Spanish big man Felipe Reyes.
The Estudiantes power forward/centre, who agrees with coach Moncho Lopez that the country simply must qualify for the Olympics to keep the sport’s visibility high in Spain, thinks medals in the European Championships are within reach.
"The objective is to classify for the Olympics and after we have achieved this then we can look at the medals," said Reyes.
"We are one of the best teams in Europe in our interior play but also on the perimeter we have good players. A team that is going to beat us will have to play very well.
"If we go out fully concentrated and don't relax then qualification for Athens is practically certain because very few teams can beat us, only we have to go out to win."
Reyes believes that he will succeed in his fitness battle and recover in time from an ankle injury which ruined the end of his ACB season with Estudiantes.
"At first I feared the worst but now things are going well and I believe that I will go to the Championships and be 100%, at least I am going to work for this," he said.
The news is not good for Forum Valladolid player Oscar Yebra, who has been discarded from the list of players to go to Sweden as coach Moncho Lopez looks to slim down his squad.
In the coming weeks Lopez will also have to decide which other player from the original squad of 16 will miss out.
Yebra who had an impressive season at guard for Valladolid, earned his call-up to the national squad but has faced tough competition from Carlos Jimenez and Alberto Herreros, the latter who has come out of international retirement to play this summer.
