 Maciej Lampe

Career: Alvik Stockholm (Sweden-Basketligan, 2000-01), Real Madrid (Spain-Liga EBA and ACB, 2001-03), New York Knicks (NBA, 2003-04), Phoenix Suns (USA-NBA, 2004-05), New Orleans Hornets (USA-NBA, 2005-06), Houston Rockets (USA-NBA, 2006), Dynamo St. Petersburg (Russia-Superleague, 2006), Khimki Moscow (Russia-Superleague, 2006-07). Selected in the second round of the 2003 NBA draft (#30) by the New York Knicks. Rights traded to Phoenix in January 2004

Lampe was born in Lodz but grew up in Sweden, where he moved with his family. He comes from a sporting family as his father and mother both played volleyball professionally in Poland. Lampe is probably the most talented young Polish player over the last ten years and he showed his talent very early, playing in the Euroleague as a 17-year-old for one of the best clubs in Europe – Real Madrid. The 2.11 m post man was the youngest player to ever play with Real Madrid’s first team and was selected in the second round of the NBA draft in 2003 by the New York Knicks. He was the first Polish player drafted by the NBA but his career did not develop as he had hoped it would. After leaving the Knicks he played for Phoenix and New Orleans, but spent more time on the bench then on the floor. Lampe had trouble imposing his style in the NBA teams, and his statistics were rather poor. The turning point of his career was coming back to Europe in the autumn of 2006, where he moved to Khimki Moscow and played very well, becoming one of their leading players. Halfway through the season he signed a new two-year deal with the club. After his less than satisfying experience in the NBA, Lampe understood that only through hard work can he stay on top of his game. His ultimate dream remains to return to the NBA but his spot on the Polish National Team seems to be a great pleasure for him. The 27-year-old is a strong player and has a great shot from three to five meters range but is more then capable of playing like a traditional center as well. Lampe has a good relationship with coach Urlep and his teammates on a new, young, Polish team.
