 Italy Duo Facing Fitness Battle

12.09.2005

Italy are hoping that guards Gianluca Basile and Gianmarco Pozzecco can recover from injury in time for Friday's EuroBasket opener against Germany in Vrsac, Serbia & Montenegro.

Both players are set to miss the Azzurri's last preparation game against France on Tuesday in Milan due to their respective injuries picked up during last week's Acropolis tournament.

BC Khimki's Pozzecco is struggling with a tendon problem in his right thigh while Barcelona star Basile has been ruled out with a back pain.

"They will continue having treatment," said national team doctor Andrea Billi.

"The tests we did in Greece have comforted us but the players will continue with therapy."

However, national coach Carlo Recalcati is confident that both players, who played an important role in Italy clinching the silver medal at the Athens Olympics, will recover in time to face Germany.

"The players are well aware of their physical conditions and they have given their availability to have specific training to recover," Recalcati said.

"They will be available for the first game of the EuroBasket."
