Fotsis May Join Papadopoulos In Russia

19.08.2005

Dynamo Moscow are hoping to lure a second Greek international star to the club after confirming they are in negotiations with power forward Antonios Fotsis

Greek center Lazaros Papadopoulos, the country's top player at the Olympics last summer, played with the Moscow outfit last season and now former NBA player Fotsis is in their sights.

Both Papadopoulos and Fotsis are in Italy preparing for EuroBasket 2005. Greece take on Italy, Latvia and Croatia in the Adriatic Tournament this weekend.

Fotsis is expected to earn a place in the final squad for the European Championships, and if he does, he will want his club future decided.

A Dynamo Moscow spokesman said: "Dynamo are having talks with Fotsis but there has been no agreement with the player yet."

Big money is being spent on basketball players in Russia so it is no surprise that Dynamo are going after leading players.

Now coached by former CSKA Moscow boss Dusan Ivkovic, Dynamo have already signed the hero of Climamio Bologna's recent title win over Armani Jeans Milano, Ruben Douglas, along with Finnish international Hanno Mottola and Pau Orthez's Mire Chatman.

Fotsis, whose endorsements have landed his image on billboards all over Athens, has always been a player deemed to have great natural talent but one who has yet to realise his full potential.

He spent four years with Panathinaikos before being snapped up by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2001.

Fotsis returned home for a season a year later before moving to Madrid in 2003.

He owns five Greek championship winners' medals (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003) and the Spanish Championship medal earned earlier this year with Madrid.

Fotsis averaged 10 points and more than five rebounds in six EuroBasket 2003 games and last summer.

At the Olympics last summer, he showed his tremendous ability against the United States, pouring in 22 points and grabbing five rebounds in their preliminary round game.

His overall performance at the Athens Games was not as eye-popping, however, with a scoring average of eight points per contest. The Greeks lost to eventual champions Argentina in the quarter-finals.

At Madrid, he played for the demanding but very successful Bozidar Maljkovic of Serbia & Montenegro.

In Moscow, Fotsis will again play for a famous Serbo-Montenegrin boss in Ivkovic.

At the EuroBasket, Greece are in Group C with Slovenia, France and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
