In our latest installment of 24 seconds, we caught up with Germany and Dallas Mavericks superstar Dirk Nowitzki.
Here's what Dirk had to say on his sporting idols, reading habits and fondness for ice cream.
What is your first sporting memory?
Nowitzki: Actually winning the Bavarian championship with my youth team in basketball. I hadn’t really played a lot of basketball before and I joined the team and a couple of months later we won the whole regional championship.
What was the last film you saw?
Nowitzki: Old School. I watched it like 10 times, its one of the greatest movies ever.
Which newspaper do you read?
Nowitzki: I'm not really big on newspapers. I go online a little bit and see what is going on.
Do you have a web site that you visit every day?
Nowitzki: Not really, I look at German sites, watch CNN sometimes, sometimes I look at the Dallas Morning News and on the road in the hotel we get the USA Today, so just keeping up on what is happening on the rest of the world a little bit.
What do you miss most about being away from home?
Nowitzki: Really just my family. Everything else I have over here. I have a great life, found a lot of new friends. But my family can't come too much because they are still working. My sister just moved back and just had a baby, so I can't be around the baby as much as I want. But in the summer I’ll be back for 2 or 3 months so that’s all good.
Is there one luxury you can’t do without?
Nowitzki: I don’t know. I don’t really lead a very luxurious life.
What about something small, like chocolate or ice cream?
Nowitzki: Well I love ice cream once in a while, but you know, I try to stay away from it as much as I can.
Who was your idol growing up?
Nowitzki: First of all I loved tennis, so Agassi, Becker. Basketball-wise, Scottie Pippen, because when I played in the 90’s it was the Bulls' era. Everybody loved Jordan, I loved Jordan too, but I loved Pippen because he was so smooth, he could do everything, he could defend, shoot, rebound, dribble the ball, run the point, so there was nothing he couldn’t do.
If you could change places with anybody in the world for one day, who would it be?
Nowitzki: Just the average Joe. Just somebody that nobody knows and just enjoy one day without anybody recognising me for one day, that’s what I would do.
Can you go anywhere in Dallas without being recognised?
Nowitzki: No. At the beginning I did, like eight years ago when Dallas wasn’t really winning and nobody was paying attention. But then Mark took over and we started to win, to get to the play-offs every year and now we get recognised everywhere.
