 France: Diaw Refusing To Panic

31.08.2005

Three defeats on the bounce is still no cause for alarm as France try to master the nuances of coach Claude Bergeaud's defensive strategy ahead of the EuroBasket.

Les Bleus, who were without big men Cyril Julian and Vincent Masingue, lost 93-85 to Turkey at the Abdi Ipekci Arena on Tuesday, following weekend defeats to Spain.

Boris Diaw poured in 25 points, but he was not concerned about his offensive output.

France have given up more than 90 points in each of their three recent setbacks and Diaw, who was recently traded from the Atlanta Hawks to the Phoenix Suns, says improvement is urgently needed.

"Against (Mehmet) Okur and (Hedo) Turkoglu, who like to break away and go one-on-one, I just tried to do my best," Diaw said to www.basketfrance.com.

"The most delicate thing in this type of situation is knowing the systems and all of the positions, and also being able to defend against different types of players and therefore, having good reflexes.

"We had small defeats against Spain late in the games and that is reassuring, but they were not large defeats.

"We need to take our score and concede fewer points. We know we have to defend hard."

Bergeaud was not too downhearted.

"This game was better controlled than those in Spain," he said.

"We are still lacking a few little things that would make the difference in a match like that.

"The absences of Cyril and Vincent did not help.

"It is true that we conceded more than 90 points again. We must keep working to learn those little defensive reflexes."
