EuroBasket hopefuls the Czech Republic completed a two-game sweep over Russia with an 80-63 triumph in Decin on Sunday.

Maurice Whitfield and Jiri Welsch confirmed their importance to the Czechs, who are preparing for the additional qualifying tournament for EuroBasket 2005, by leading the team in scoring.

Philadelphia-born Whitfield, a sharpshooter with Mattoni NBL champions and FIBA EuroCup side Nymburk who gained Czech citizenship this year and was added to national team, was four of nine from the field, including two of four from behind the arc, and finished with 17 points. Whitfield was seven of eight from the free throw line.

Welsch, who was recently traded by the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Milwaukee Bucks, weighed in with 16 in Sunday's win, making 10 of 13 from the line.

Lubos Barton, who had 17 in Saturday's 97-69 triumph over the Russians in Prague's Folimanka Hall, had another fine offensive game with 15.

Ondrej Starosta, rested in the first game because of a calf injury, had 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Czechs trailed 20-15 after the opening quarter but led 40-36 at half-time and after holding a 56-52 advantage, they pulled away for a decisive win.

Russia's 2.01m forward Vladimir Dyachok led the visitors with 17 points.
