 Czech Coach In Confident Mood

03.08.2005

The Czech Republic travel to Sweden for two friendly games in good shape following their training camps in Opava and Nymburk, according to coach Michal Jezdik.

Jezdik is confident that the camps have formed an ideal build-up for his side, and said: "I am satisfied with our preparation so far - we have done all that I planned.

"I am very happy that the players gave 100% in every training session, and that our 'new' player, former American Maurice Whitfield, has integrated without any problems.

"The only slight problem is the fitness of some players. Ondrej Starosta has some problems with his calf, Radek Necas with his back and Ladislav Sokolovsky injured his knee during the last session in Nymburk, but these injuries do not look serious.

"You cannot be nervous because of situations like this. We have to have more players to cover every position. We have players who can play in a number of positions, which is important in modern basketball, particularly at international level.

"We have done a lot more ball-work in the last couple of training sessions to prepare for the two friendlies in Sweden. We will use these two games to allow new players, or those who are coming back into the squad after a long time, to settle in.

"We have to have a good understanding within the squad. Picking Daniel Dousa may surprise some people, but we only have two classic centers - Ondrej Starosta and Petr Benda. Starosta has an injury, and we cannot get by with just one centre," Jezdik told www.basket.idnes.cz.

Czech Republic squad: Petr Czudek, Maurice Whitfield, Jan Pavlik, Jiri Welsch, Lubos Barton, Pavel Milos, Jiri Cernosek, Ladislav Sokolovsky, Ondrej Starosta, Petr Benda, Zbynek Pospisil, Daniel Dousa.
