 Germany: Mamic Back On Court

14.01.2006

Matej Mamic plans a return to the scene of his worst nightmare on his 31st birthday as he takes another step towards a full recovery from a life-threatening back and neck injury.

The ALBA Berlin forward has been in the Berlin-Marzahn hospital recovering from a blow to the head that left him paralysed from the neck down for several hours following a fall in Berlin's Bundesliga fixture with Trier in November.

After regaining feeling in his limbs, the confident Mamic has been undergoing intense physiotherapy to keep alive his hopes of a return to the court, a target that is becoming more realistic by the day.

"I'm a bit slow dribbling with the ball but I nailed nine shots in a row from four metres," he told the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper.

Mamic will make his first return to a basketball court on January 25 to see his team mates in action against Braunschweig and has no fears about stepping out again at the Max Schmeling Hall.

"I want to get back in the Max Schmeling Hall and thank the fans for their support, it's certainly going to be a great feeling," he said.

"When I think of the Hall, I don't think of the game agains Trier, but about my first game for ALBA against Efes Pilsen Istanbul or when I received the trophy a year later as captain."

Due to his excellent progress, Mamic could even leave hospital by the middle of February and the Croatian is even planning to cut short a family holiday in the summer to give him more time to work on a comeback.

"I will only go to Rome for a week and otherwise train every day," he added.

"This summer will be very important and I want to catch up on lost time. If I have to, I will try 100,000 shots.

"My life will only be back to 100% when I can play basketball again."
