Giricek Ok - Spahija

Gordan Giricek is feeling no ill effects from his clash with France point guard Tony Parker in Croatia’s overtime defeat to Les Bleus in the German Super Cup on Friday.

Giricek, the 6ft 6in (198 cm) Orlando Magic sharpshooting guard, had to leave the game with an elbow injury just three minutes into the contest and Croatia missed their talisman, particularly in the half-court sets on offence, and France scraped 94-87 win.

"He was hurt in the first three minutes but he’s okay," Croatia coach Neven Spahija told PA International on Saturday afternoon ahead of their game against Germany.

"He’ll be 100% against Germany."

Giricek averaged 16 points a game at the Eurobasket two years ago in Turkey.

Croatia struggled from the free throw line and also had 22 turnovers, but Spahija was not too discouraged.

One reason he had to be cheerful was that despite losing his best player, Croatia remained close and forced the overtime.

He was boosted by the powerful inside play of his athletic power forward Andrija Zizic, a 6ft 10in (207 cm) big man at Croatia Split who continues to improve for the national team.

Zizic poured in a team-high 22 points. He averaged only seven points in qualifying.

Zoran Planinic, one of Spahija’s more consistent scorers during qualifying, added 18 against the French.

"Everyday, things are getting better. We’re taking it step by step and I hope we keep getting better.

"Without Giriceck, we lacked discipline in our half-court offence. As for Zizic, he’s been one of our best players this summer."
