Kristaps Valters

Career: Broceni Riga (Latvia-LBL, 1998-2000), Muratpasa Antalya (Turkey-TBL, 2000-2001), Skonto Riga (Latvia-LBL, 2001-03), Panionios Athens (Greece-ESAKE, 2003), Skonto Riga (Latvia-LBL, 2004), EWE Oldenburg (Germany-1.Bundesliga, 2004-06), Snaidero Udine (Italia-Lega, 2006-07).

The youngest son of former USSR basketball star Valdis Valters, Kristaps was regarded as one of the biggest basketball prospects in Latvia as a teenager. Kristaps won numerous titles in Latvian youth basketball leagues and had an outstanding performance at the U18 European Championship (1998) where Latvia reached the semi-finals and qualified for the World Championship. However, his debut with the "big boys" did not go as smoothly. He is very quick and a good shooter but can be impatient and was not tactically smart enough to excel in Turkey or Greece. His dreams of joining Biedrins in the NBA didn’t come true either.  Kristaps has put forth his best showings while playing for teams coached by his father because Valters Sr. knows how to utilize his son's talent to the maximum.  Valters is now older and smarter and his third international experience was much more successful then his first two.  After two good seasons Bundesliga side Oldenburg, Valters went to Udine where he was one of their key players, even leading the team in assists. After being a back-up at the point guard position for most of his National Team career, Valters handled the starting job during the qualifying round which enabled him to show off his playmaking skills. His 5.5 assists per game led the team.
