The eldest son of former Soviet Union star, Valdis Valters and the brother of likely starting point guard Kristaps, Sandis was never regarded as a big basketball prospect. As a junior, his strong points were good defense and a fighting spirit but years of regular practices with his father and one-on-one games against Kristalps have made Sandis a better player and one the best shooters in Latvian basketball. Valters has spent most of his career in Riga, except for a short escapade in Ukraine (2004-05). During the last two seasons, he has been the captain and leader of ASK Riga. In the 2007 EuroCup, he averaged 16.8 points (fifth best in the competition) and was selected to the All-Star Game. He plays his best basketball when on court with his brother Kristaps since this duo understands each other without words.
