PLAYER PROFILE

Career: VEF Riga (Latvia-LBL, 1996-97), Broceni Riga (Latvia-LBL, 1997-2001), BK Ventspils (Latvia-LBL, 2001-05).

Probably not the most heralded of the Latvian big guys but certainly one of the most effective… A former Under 22 national team player back in 1998, Martins Skirmants was the one of the main factors in Latvia’s successful qualifying run to EuroBasket 2005 as he controlled the paint in the absence of star Kaspars Kambala, showing a great feel for rebounds and being an intimidating presence under the boards, registering 10 blocks in six games… This was a surprise to many outside observers as Skirmants had never been a factor on the international stage… The four time Latvian champion with BK Ventspils, and LBL All-Star player carried on his inspired play into the 2004-05 season both in the local league and in the ULEB Cup.
