Although there was more than 1 remarkable individual performance in this week’s FIBA Europe League, one definitely stood out.
GHP Bamberg guard Gurt Kullamäe put on a sensational long range shooting performance on Wednesday night, hitting 10 of 14 3-pointers against Ural Great. More importantly Kullamäe’s 30-point haul was the key factor in his side’s 80:78 victory over the Russian powerhouses.
Kullamäe’s night included hitting 5 consecutive long range bombs in the second quarter to propel his team into the lead.
When Bamberg lost their American center Jason Sasser to injury, it looked as if they would struggle to hold on to the game. However, that they did, and another 3-pointer from Kullamäe with 3 minutes to go, secured Bamberg’s lead and also the victory.
Kullamäe, a 1.96 guard, hails from Estonia where he began his career with fellow FIBA Europe League side Kalev Tallinn. He then spent 2 seasons in Lithuania with Zalgiris Kaunas before returning to Talinn. After having spent a season with Telindus Oostende in Belgium, he moved to Bamberg in 2001. He was a key factor in Bamberg’s 2002/2003 campaign, where they made it all the way to the Bundesliga Finals.
Honourable MVP mention goes to Skonto center Andris Biedrins and NIS Vojvodina guard Istavan Nemeth.
The 17-year old Biedrins has literally exploded onto the European scene this season, his second in Skonto’s senior team. Against Finnish champions Honka Playboys, the 2.13 cm center hit for 34 points. He also pulled down 8 rebounds and blocked 6 shots in 38 minutes on the court. Despite his young age he has proved that he can already contribute at this level and is certainly a name to look out for. Stay tuned to fibaeurope.com for a feature on the up-and-coming star.
Istavan Nemeth may not have overwhelmed statistically in Vojvodina’s away win over Telestet Maroussi Athens. He only scored 7 points in the 72-71 victory. What he did do though, was hit the game winning free throws. Despite having missed his only 2 previous attempts in the game, the Hungarian point guard calmly stepped up to the line with 8 seconds on the clock and his team down by 1 point. He drained both attempts, giving his team their second victory in the FIBA Europe League.
