Career: LKS Lodz (2001-03), RheinEnergie Köln (Germany-Bundesliga, 2003-07). Selected in the second round of the 2005 NBA draft (#27) by the Phoenix Suns. Rights traded to the Orlando Magic immediately
Gortat started his sports journey as a soccer fan and player, but quite early his height became a problem on the pitch. At 16 and over two meters tall, he decided to switch to basketball. The Lodz native spent his formative years with LKS Lodz juniors and made his debut with the professional team in 2002-03. The next year, he moved to Germany and signed with RheinEnergie Köln, where he is still playing. Gortat has improved drastically during the past two seasons and in 2006, he won the Bundesliga title which led to a strong debut in the Euroleague. He was the top rebounder for Köln with 5.6 boards per contest and their second-leading scorer averaging 10.4 per game. Gortat was selected in the second round of the 2005 NBA draft with the 27th pick by the Phoenix Suns, but was quickly traded to the Orlando Magic. He played in an NBA Summer League for Orlando but has yet to accomplish his dream of playing in the NBA. The 23-year-old is a strong defensive player and a very good shot blocker. |
