 Spain: Fran The Man

28.06.2005

Unicaja Malaga center Fran Vazquez is not fazed by the prospect of playing in the NBA.

A Spaniard who went into the season as a potential NBA Draft pick, Vazquez was so effective for the Copa del Rey winners this season in the ACB that draft experts predict he will be among the top 15 choices in New York on Tuesday night.

The 22-year-old, who stands 209 cm, averaged more than 11 points, six rebounds and a block in 24 minutes per game this season.

What impressed scouts most about Vazquez, who plays alongside established Spanish international Jorge Garbajosa at Unicaja, was his willingness to do the dirty work.

Vazquez is excited about playing in North America, but he admits that staying in Spain for another year of seasoning is a possibility.

"I don't know what is going to happen next year, it is all going to depend on what happens in the draft," he said.

"After that, I will sit down and talk with my people and weigh things up."

"I don't know if I will make the move now or wait for another year in Spain, but what I do know is that I can play anywhere in the world," he added.

As for being constantly compared to 215 cm compatriot Pau Gasol, a leading player with the Memphis Grizzlies, Vazquez said: "Pau and I are different players.

"Maybe we are similar heights, but I have always said we have different styles, ever since we started being compared.

"However, I see any comparison with Pau as praise."
