 Youthful Spain Prepare For EuroBasket

23.08.2005

Tau Ceramica forward Sergi Vidal has had no problems settling into life with Spain's national team.

The 25-year-old is one of three debutants in the group squad preparing for next month's EuroBasket in Serbia & Montenegro.

"After five years in the ACB, I know everyone by sight and we are all getting on very well," he said.

"We had all enjoyed a great reception, coaches, players and officials and everyone feels very comfortable."

Spain will travel to the event with a squad that has an average age of just 24.

Players such as Rudy Fernandez and Sergio Rodriguez are looked upon as bright prospects for the future, while the likes of Juan Carlos Navarro and Jose Manuel Calderon are considered veterans despite still being in their mid-20s.

Vidal believes Spain's youthful squad will be a bonus rather than a hindrance.

"It is true that nearly all of us are young," he said.

"But also that the majority of us have also played in a lot of competitions with Spain as well as having had important games with their clubs."

"I think we have more than enough experience."

Vidal is accustomed to playing in the big games.

He was a key member of a Tau team which made it all the way the Euroleague Final last season before losing to Maccabi Tel Aviv. Tau were also runners-up in the ACB to Real Madrid.

Fellow debutant Albert Miralles has also thrown his weight behind Spain's policy of concentrating on the future generation.

"It doesn't matter how young the players are, they are all reference points for their clubs," he said.

"It is not a question of being young or not, everyone has young players and sometimes they are the stars.

"I don't think that is a factor for anyone."
