Late Kirilenko Heroics Not Enough for Jazz

25.03.2004

Russian sensation Andrei Kirilenko's late scoring burst wasn't enough to lift the Utah Jazz to victory over fellow play-off hopefuls Seattle on Wednesday.

Utah climbed to within 80-77 with 24 seconds remaining after Kirilenko scored five straight points but Ray Allen and Antonio Daniels each made a pair of free throws after as the SuperSonics held on for an 84-77 win.

Seattle showed how crucial free throw shooting is, making 26 of 28 from the line in the contest.

Daniels was just two of eight from the floor but made a clutch layup in the final minutes and was perfect from the stripe.

Kirilenko finished with 16 points and eight rebounds for the Jazz, who lost for just the fifth time in their last 15 games.

Utah made just four of 16 shots in the first quarter and went five of 21 in the second. Kirilenko was one of seven from the floor in the first half while Raja Bell, who did not play after half-time, was one of six.

"I just think we can't make shots," Kirilenko said. "We just couldn't score and didn't make any layups. Sometimes we played a little bit stupid. We take a shot, we take a shot, we take a bad shot."

The setback was a crucial one for the Jazz, who fell one-half game behind Denver for the eighth and final play-off spot in the Western Conference.

The SuperSonics (33-38) moved within three and a half games of Utah and trail ninth-place Portland by three.
