Garba’s Olympic Dreams All But Shattered

30.04.2008

The Toronto Raptors have revealed that Jorge Garbajosa will not play at the Olympics this summer for Spain if he is under contract with the Canadian team.

Garbajosa, who went against the wishes of the Raptors last summer after his rookie campaign to help his country capture a silver medal at the EuroBasket in Madrid, missed most of this season following an operation on his leg.

Raptors president and general manager Bryan Colangelo said at the press conference following Toronto's exit from the NBA play-offs that Garbajosa's absence had been devastating for the team.

The club is currently in litigation with the Spanish Basketball Federation over the player's insurance policy that was taken out for Garbajosa to play at the EuroBasket.

"The quicker that goes away, I'm sure he'll have a freer mind," Colangelo said of the legal battle.

"I think it's a safe assumption to say that Garbajosa will not be playing in the Olympics as long as he's under contract with us.

"I know I'm not making many people in Spain happy but, that's a safe assumption.

"I think he is accepting of his current state, which is one of uncertainty, and he knows now more  than ever that this is a situation he needs to handle with great care."

Colangelo then added: "We have a team option on his contract."
