 Giricek Inspires First Croatian Win
From Johannes Berendt, PA International, Braunschweig

24.08.2003

Croatia picked up their only win in three Super Cup games on Sunday with an 84-69 trouncing of Sweden in Braunschweig.

Croatian guard Gordan Giricek, who plies his trade with NBA side the Orlando Magic, top scored with 25 points, with 17 of them coming in the first 20 minutes.

Zoran Planicic, who finished with 12 points, was full of praise for the four-nation tournament which he described as "excellent".

He said: "The top of Europe is playing here, so it´s good competition. This was more for the tactics, we now go back to Zagreb to get our shooting touch."

Earlier in the tournament, the New Jersey Nets draft pick contributed 18 points in a 94-87 overtime loss to France, but was limited to just two points in the 91-84 defeat by Germany.

He said: "I feel pain everywhere but still it was good preparation."

Injuries meant Croatia were unable to field their best line-up all the way through the tournament.

Giricek left the France match early with an elbow injury, while Andrija Zizic twisted his knee near the start of the Germany match.

The injury was not serious, however, as he returned with 12 points against Sweden on Sunday.

"We don't have our flow and form yet - we´re maybe at 50 or 60 per cent now," Giricek admitted.

"My legs are very tired and I had temperature three days ago. Last week I was also injured so it´s my main goal to get my body in shape for the European championship."
