Savrasenko Calls Time On International Career

30.08.2007
Russia centre Alexei Savrasenko has announced he will retire from the national set up following EuroBasket 2007.

The 28-year-old CSKA Moscow player has decided to stop playing for his country even if they qualify for the Olympics after revealing he feels he doesn`t fit in anymore.

"I've decided during the international tournament in Germany that the forthcoming European Championship will be the last competition for me as a National Team player," he told Soviet Sport.

"Even if we qualify for the Olympic Games, the team doesn't need me. It`s not that I don't need the team but the team doesn't need me.

"Try to remember the two previous European Championships. I didn't mix with any of the squad and I can tell you honestly that I'm disappointed very much with that fact.

"I`ve always supported the National Team, responded to every call to the National Team."

Russia head coach David Blatt insisted he had no problem with Savrasenko`s decision as he announced his final squad for the EuroBasket in Spain.

"We have no conflict with Savrasenko," he said.

"We've been working with him, he was disappointed with a lack of playing time before.

"However, we had a talk with him today. We've come to an agreement that it doesn't matter how many minutes he will play he will try to bring as much use to the team as possible."
