FIBA Europe League Player of the Week – Chris Anstey (UNICS Kazan)
 Jon Ingram

07.11.2003

After 4 weeks of action in the FIBA Europe League just 2 clubs remain undefeated. NIS Vojvodina (SCG) and UNICS Kazan (RUS) have both recorded 4-0 records and both offered up legitimate candidates for the MVP of the Week in Chris Anstey and Milan Gurovic.

Kazan’s 213 cm center Chris Anstey became the first Australian to play in Russia when he signed for Ural Great last season. He went all the way to the Russian Superleague Finals with them before losing to CSKA Moscow. This season, Anstey has moved to rivals Unics Kazan, the team that Ural Great defeated in last year’s Russian Superleague play-offs.

Anstey, who was MVP of the 1997 World Championship for Young Men, was a key reason for UNICS keeping their 100% FEL record this week. In a tough road game against powerhouse PAOK Thessaloniki, UNICS displayed their pedigree by winning 98:71. Anstey led his team in both scoring (29 points), rebounding (8) and also added 2 blocks.

Gurovic came a close second to Anstey after his 21 point, 7 rebound performance in Vojovodina’s overtime 93:89 win over Strauss Iscar Nahariya (ISR). Gurovic’s return to Serbia and Montenegro was welcome news for his club and country and so far he has not disappointed.

Although he struggled with his shooting touch (4/12 from the field), Gurovic hit 11/13 free throws, and more importantly, 2 clutch freebies to take the game into overtime.
