Greek captain Michail Kakiouzis admitted Thursday his team is drawing inspiration from the side which captured the 1987 EuroBasket title while they themselves seek gold in Belgrade.
"We're close to doing something really big," Kakiouzis said following Greece's 66-61 come-from-behind victory over Russia to move into the semi-finals of the 2005 EuroBasket.
Kakiouzis, who was 10 years old when Greece beat the Soviet Union 103-101 in front of 17,000 Greek fans, said that success is branded into the memories of him and his team-mates.
"All of our players grew up with this team (which included current coach Panagiotis Yannakis). They all help us. They're like gods for us," Kakiouzis said.
"I hope we can do something nearly as big as what they did."
Greece play either defending champions Lithuania or France in Saturday's semi-finals in Belgrade.
